WHAT A SICK BEAT

By Thursday, March 05, 2015

House music player Matej Hamer began working as a DJ more than twelve years ago and has been producing music for five years now, although his first approach to DJ-ing came way long before.

«The first time I was at a club and I saw a DJ I figured out I wanted to become one of them. It’s hard to explain, but there is so much passion in it and my soul gets hungry for it, so it is like nurture for my soul.», says Matej in the long interview we had the chance to conduct with him.

Willing to take production to the next level, Matej is currently spending much of his time and energy in building up a studio equipment in order to produce good tunes and have releases on good labels. Furthermore this year he will do his fourth summer residency at Alaya Beach Club in Portorose, Slovenia, where he gets to play for more than one thousand people coming from all over Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and plenty of other tourists each Fridays and Saturdays. Those nights are full of great energy and lots of passion given by those people who actually understand the deep and tech sounds, all performed just by the sea.

Matej aim is to perform at the BPM festival in Mexico, and maybe the chance of getting famous, but surely the most important thing to him is to enjoy his work and even better the fact that he gets paid for something that really makes him happy and that he likes doing. In fact he prefers to play music that he likes rather than doing more commercial to get more gigs.

The secret in making a song, he says, is just going with the flow by putting different sounds together  with different compressions or effects, knowing that the only limit is the direction you want your song to go to. Sure a good base is inspiration: passion is the key to produce sounds he loves and that he likes to share with people who understand it.

For this summer, aside from the residency contract at Alaja Beach Club, that gets him to perform at weekends, there are lots of open air events and festivals during the week at Croatia and Italy seaside where Matej will be playing the new gigs he's working on.

Dreaming big, the BPM Festival is definitely Matej’s goal, where any kind of commercial and EDM sounds get played by all the deep and tech house artists and the pioneers: a really pure house festival. He also mentioned that he would really love to make a collaboration with Mark Knight, Chus, Joris Voorn, Tube & Berger, who all represent a great inspiration to him, but there are also many other good artist he’d like to play with.

Last but not least, Matej loves graphic design and events organization, and he says that if he wouldn’t be working as a DJ, we surely would have found him somewhere there. And before closing we’d like to report you his answer to our latest question: what do you personally think about Jack U & Bieber collaboration and do you think that in that meaning the new so called EDM is going in the new pop direction? Matej answered: «As I was playing house music since I started, I can really see which directions the genre is taking. I never looked at EDM as house music but more as "pop for dancing" kind of music. At EDM festivals you can see people who never liked house music but they like EDM. So on one side it is good as it makes the market grow bigger, but on the other side it loses its quality by fitting into all. It's nothing new to make a celebration with a dance artist and a pop star, the big bang was given by David Guetta with the Black Eyed Peas together, and since then it is something that gets more and more common. Just to get more crowd together, so it gets more commercial.».
